If space is truly the final frontier, we can't afford to take chances with its development. To avoid dangerous staking of space by nations and private enterprises, an intelligent, coordinated approach to exploration and settlement is needed.

The question should not be who controls the moon, Mars and beyond but how can we all work together, using the best of our knowledge and technologies to control the development of these places for the sake of future generations?

We cannot afford to mishandle the opening of space. The unfortunate scars of human pioneering can already be seen: accumulating space junk that poses a growing threat to future missions. Clean solutions are critical to long-term success in space. There are promising, green technologies that can help us leave space as clean as we found it.
